Archival Information System Hessen (Arcinsys Hessen)

The Archival Information System Hessen (often abbreviated Arcinsys Hessen) is the official online research portal for the state archives of Hesse in Germany. It provides centralized access to archival holdings from institutions such as the Hessian State Archives in Marburg, Darmstadt, and Wiesbaden.

The system is designed as a digital finding aid, allowing researchers to search, browse, and identify archival materials across a wide range of collections. These include government records, military documents, court files, church registers, maps, and personal papers, many of which are especially valuable for studying regions like Hesse-Kassel and Hesse-Darmstadt.

A key feature of Arcinsys is its structured archival hierarchy, where records are organized by fonds (Bestände), series, and individual files. Entries typically include reference numbers (e.g., HStAM Bestand…), descriptions of contents, date ranges, and sometimes digitized images of original documents.

For military historians and genealogists, the system is particularly useful because it includes muster rolls, rank lists, regimental records, and administrative correspondence, enabling detailed reconstruction of personnel and unit histories.
