Exercir-Reglement, Vor des Allerdurchläuchtigsten, Großmächtigsten Fürsten und Herrn, Herrn Friedrich des Ersten (1741) is an important mid-18th-century Hessian military regulation manual governing the infantry militia (“Land-Milice”) of Frederick I of Sweden. Published during the period when Frederick simultaneously ruled Sweden and Hesse-Kassel, the work reflects the highly disciplined military culture for which Hesse-Kassel became famous throughout Europe.

The manual sets forth the official drill regulations and field procedures for infantry service, including:

  • Manual of arms and musket drill
  • Formation marching and battlefield maneuvering
  • Officer command structure and parade procedure
  • Guard duty and camp discipline
  • Deployment of militia infantry in wartime service
  • Standardized battlefield commands in German military terminology

Historically, the 1741 edition is significant because it belongs to the transitional era between earlier baroque military systems and the increasingly standardized linear tactics later perfected during the reign of Frederick II of Prussia. The regulations illustrate how smaller German states such as Hesse-Kassel adopted rigorous military administration and drill practices comparable to those of Prussia.
