Kurfürstlich Hessisches Hof- und Staatshandbuch is an official governmental and court directory of the Electorate of Hesse (Kurhessen), published periodically in the 18th and 19th centuries.
The handbook serves as a formal administrative register of the electorate’s court, civil administration, and military establishment. It typically lists members of the ruling household, government ministries, judicial officials, and senior officers of the Hessian armed forces.
A central function of the work is to document the structure of the state and its hierarchy, including court offices, noble appointments, administrative posts, and military command positions. It provides an authoritative snapshot of how the Electorate of Hesse was organized at a given point in time.
The military sections are especially valuable, as they often include rosters of regiments, officer lists, and command structures, making the handbook an important reference for reconstructing Hessian military organization prior to and during the Napoleonic period and into the 19th century.
In addition to administrative data, the publication reflects the courtly and bureaucratic culture of a German territorial state, emphasizing protocol, rank, and institutional continuity within the elector’s government.
