Atlas pour servir à l'intelligence de l'histoire critique et militaire des guerres de la révolution

Atlas pour servir à l’intelligence de l’histoire critique et militaire des guerres de la Révolution
By Antoine-Henri Jomini
Bruxelles, 1839

This richly detailed atlas is a companion work to Antoine-Henri Jomini’s broader historical and analytical writings on the French Revolutionary Wars. Designed to support his Histoire critique et militaire des guerres de la Révolution, the atlas presents a systematic visual and cartographic interpretation of the campaigns, battles, and strategic movements that shaped the military history of Revolutionary Europe.

Rather than a simple collection of maps, Jomini’s atlas reflects his pioneering approach to military theory—linking geography directly to strategy. It illustrates troop movements, lines of operation, fortifications, river crossings, and key theaters of war across France, Belgium, the Rhineland, Italy, and beyond. Each plate is intended to clarify the operational logic behind campaigns conducted by both Republican and Coalition forces.

The 1839 Brussels edition reflects Jomini’s mature strategic thinking, developed after his service in both the French and Russian armies. His analytical framework—focused on lines of operation, decisive points, and interior versus exterior maneuvering—became foundational for modern military doctrine in Europe and later influenced 19th-century military academies worldwide.
