Der Feldzug am Mittelrhein in den Monaten Mai, Juni und Juli 1794

Der Feldzug am Mittelrhein in den Monaten Mai, Juni und Juli 1794…
August Lufft, G. Braun, Karlsruhe, 1870

This detailed German military study examines the Middle Rhine campaign of 1794 during the French Revolutionary Wars, focusing on operations conducted in the Palatinate and surrounding Rhine frontier regions.

The work provides a focused operational history of the Allied defensive positions along the mountain and fortified post line (Gebirgspostenlinie) between Edenkoben and Kaiserslautern, culminating in the French breakthrough and destruction of this defensive system on 13 July 1794.

Drawing on military reports and regional sources, the author reconstructs troop movements, fortification layouts, command decisions, and the tactical engagements between French Revolutionary forces and Coalition armies operating in the Rhine theater. Particular attention is given to the geography of the Palatinate, the defensive planning of the Allied forces, and the French operational methods used to penetrate and dismantle the defensive line.

The study situates the 1794 Middle Rhine operations within the broader context of the War of the First Coalition, highlighting how French pressure along the Rhine gradually undermined Allied defensive systems and opened the path for deeper incursions into German territory.
