Pichegru und Condé in den Jahren 1795 und 1796. Zur Ergänzung der Correspondenz Klinglin's

Ritter Heinrich von Zeißberg, C. Gerold’s Sohn, Wien, 1898

This historical study examines political and military developments involving Jean-Charles Pichegru and the émigré commander Louis Joseph de Bourbon, Prince de Condé during the critical years 1795–1796 of the French Revolutionary Wars.

The work is structured as a documentary supplement to the correspondence of Klinglin, using letters and archival material to reconstruct the complex relationship between French Revolutionary military leaders and Royalist émigré forces operating in coordination with Coalition powers. It focuses on the political and military maneuvering that accompanied the final phase of Royalist hopes for restoring the Bourbon monarchy through foreign intervention.

A central theme is the role of Pichegru, a senior French general whose conduct during this period has long been associated with ambiguity and alleged secret contacts with Royalist and émigré circles. The study analyzes his operations in the Rhine theater and his position within the Army of the Rhine and later the Army of the North, particularly during the campaigns of 1795–1796.

In parallel, the book follows the activities of the Prince de Condé and his émigré army, which served alongside Coalition forces, including Austrian and other German contingents, in operations along the Rhine frontier. The text situates these forces within the broader strategic context of the War of the First Coalition, where coordination between émigré troops and regular Coalition armies was often politically and militarily complicated.

The work is primarily based on correspondence and archival sources, making it a documentary and analytical study rather than a narrative campaign history. It provides insight into the intersection of diplomacy, espionage, and military operations during a highly fluid period of Revolutionary warfare in Germany and eastern France.

While Hessian units are not a central focus, they may appear indirectly within Coalition operations in the Rhine theater, where various German state contingents operated alongside Austrian and émigré forces during 1795–1796.
